Leaf vs Plant

I have thought it interesting when people wrote that the leaves they put down from a new plant often grew better than the new plant itself.  This is the first time I've experienced that theory.  On...

Re: Leaf vs Plant

You are right, Bonnie!  I would have guessed the other way around.  Maybe there is something to that theory.  Does this warrant another experiment? Anne

Re: Leaf vs Plant

Irene, until someone knowledgeable can weigh in about the suckers there is a thread about suckers under the subforum heading of Growing and Propagation. It is on the 2nd page about half way down. The...

Re: Leaf vs Plant

Wow, a picture says a thousand words!! There was a thread/conversation (not too sure where it was... maybe I read it online?) about buying a plant vs. buying a leaf, and quite a few people picked...

Re: Leaf vs Plant

I have to agree with Bonnie on this subject.A violet propagated from a leaf in my home will grow better and hardier than a plant sent by a vendor.  The difficulty is getting the leaf to root then...

Re: Leaf vs Plant

I, too, have found this to be true most of the time! I won't say every time though... A plant that's propagated in your home is used to your homes' atmosphere, water ph, etc. from the get-go. There's...

Re: Leaf vs Plant

I think its true too. My plants from leaves do much better than plants I receive in the mail or even plants I get at my club. I always put down a leaf from each.

Re: Leaf vs Plant

Well, Elizabeth has certainly made a believer out of me. I'm going to follow what most of you are doing and put down a leaf every time a new plant comes into the house. That way I can enjoy the...

Re: Leaf vs Plant

I agree. Plants grown from leaf always seem to grow better than shipped plants. I'm with Jon. I always put down leaves when I receive plants. There's always one or two broken, why waste them? LOL

Re: Leaf vs Plant

Thanks Bonnie. It's looking like I'm going to end up tossing my jolly diamonds. I'll try propagating  a few leaves just to see if I get any non-suckerers.

Re: Leaf vs Plant

Irene, I think leaves of Jolly Diamonds will do fine... even if the mother plant suckers. And yes, I find that a plant that was a sucker from another plant, MAY tend to sucker itself. Not 100% of the...

Re: Leaf vs Plant

MrsJ, it was reassuring to read that you also had difficulty with Elizabeth. I know you are probably much more disciplined than I in attempting to find the ideal conditions for Elizabeth, and if she...

Re: Leaf vs Plant

Thanks for the suggestion, Mrs. John. I knew it was a Pittman/tx hybrid, but the idea of using it for the project didn't occur to me! I didn't get rid of the plants just pulled more suckers off and...
